The Sonar Bangla LNG Initiative (Shonar Bangla LNG-To-Power Project) is a large-scale strategic partnership aimed at securing a dedicated energy value chain from the United States to Bangladesh. The project focuses on providing long-term, stable, and predictably priced gas supply linked to the Henry Hub index, bridging the gap between US natural gas production and Bangladesh's growing energy needs.

The initiative is structured in phases, beginning with the immediate supply of 2.6 million metric tons of LNG annually (approx. 216,000 tons/month) to existing FSRU terminals in Moheshkhali. The long-term plan includes establishing a dedicated land-based terminal on Kutubdia Island with an ultimate capacity of 7.5 MTPA (1000 MMscfd).

Crucial infrastructure developments include a new Gas Pipeline Connector linking the Kutubdia terminal directly to the Petrobangla national grid at major valve stations. Furthermore, the project envisions the development of high-efficiency Gas Turbine Combined Cycle (GTCC) power plants with capacities ranging from 1200MW to 2400MW in strategic locations like Chanua and Banshkhali.
